Anyone who knows me and who reads this blog knows that I LOVE coffee. I mean, just, just love it. Need it. Love it. Always. The aroma, the warmth, the comfort, the pep. Ahhhh.
Not so long ago I had a terrible lapse in judgement and tried to go without coffee for three days as part of a New Year’s “cleanse”. I actually believed I would be able to do it! But I only lasted a few hours… and that was the saddest morning EVER!
Midday I raced home from work, brewed a small pot of joe, cradled my cup in a Gollum-like craze… and saved myself from the pit of despair.
Amazing was the day when I received a package from Door County Coffee with an array of varieties to taste and explore – a glorious opportunity made possible by my fellow coffee addicts at Taste of Home.
A bit about Door County: it is a coffee roasting company in Carlsville, Wisconsin in the Sturgeon Bay area and was founded in 1993. The family-owned business purchases high-quality Arabica beans from over a dozen countries, working closely with small producers to support and sustain their farms and businesses.
The coffee is roasted in small batches on-site at the roasting facility and café in Carlsville. You can enjoy a cup while watching the Roast Masters at work!
Over several days I brewed these coffees up at home in my automatic drip pot and French press… and I was not disappointed!
The coffees are smooth, full-bodied and delicious, and I found that to be consistent across all the varieties I tried. Their small-batch roasting is obviously done with care and tightly controlled, because there was no trace whatsoever of burnt or scorched beans!
There are about 29 varieties of non-flavored coffees (like Country Morning Blend, Kona Blend and Death’s Door) and 28 flavored coffees available year-round. In addition Door County has seasonal flavors like Autumn Spice and Cranberry-Orange Muffin in the fall; Blueberry Cobbler and Just Peachy in the spring!
I got to try a couple of the spring flavors like Blackberry Shortcake, Orange Creme and my favorite: Chocolate Covered Strawberry, which has a wonderful, fresh-strawberry flavor. I brewed some to enjoy alongside Delicious Almond Braids, a recipe for flaky, almond-filled pastries from the Taste of Home website!
Something I appreciated about these coffees was how natural the flavors were.
Most flavored coffees have an off-putting, artificial tang to them, but these were light and pleasant. One that I love is the Jamaican Me Crazy, which is full of vanilla-rum flavor!
The Highlander Grogg was another tasty one that I used in this Taste of Home recipe for Cappuccino Muffins.
The original recipe calls for instant coffee but instead I swapped in the Highlander Grogg coffee:
- Coffee in place of half of the milk in the muffin batter
- 2 teaspoons of coffee added to the cream cheese frosting instead of the instant.
The Irish cream and caramel flavors in the Highlander were a very nice compliment to the mocha flavors in these muffins. Served alongside a hot cuppa, of course!
This was one successful taste-testing! Great coffees and I’m so glad I had the chance to try them – and I hope you will, too! Door County Coffee makes it easy to do so because on their website you’ll find:
