It’s almost May 5th! Cinco de Mayo! I don’t know about anyone else, but I feel like this celebration always sneaks up on me – often on the morning of the cinco de mayo. Sometimes there is a scramble to put together a plan for going out to a bar or local Mexican restaurant. Or try to have people over but then I remember that the fridge is just about bare. Not to mention the state of the house! And if Cinco de Mayo falls in the middle of a work/school week than it’s pretty much a guarantee that a trip to Moe’s or a bowl of chips and salsa will be as festive as we get!
Hopefully you are seeing this post with enough warning that you can plan for a Cinco de Mayo celebration – and why go out and spend all your money on overpriced beer and nachos, when you can have loads of delicioso food at your house! Have your friends over after work or put together a festive dinner for your family! If you have time to grab some decorations at your local party store, like a string of colorful flags or a piñata with or without candy, great! If not, just pull together some colorful table linens and napkins (Mexican flag colors are red, green and white, but orange, yellow, and bright blue also look really festive.) Turn on some tunes too – Pandora is an easy way to have a steady flow of party music. Look for a station of Mariachi music or my personal favorite, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass!
The most important part of the celebration is the food and refreshments! I shared some of these recipes on The Morning Brew at Fox Local 22/44 with Amanda Lindquist, Brittney Hibbs and Megan Carpenter! It’s always rewarding to share treats with everyone there, and they seemed especially excited to dive into these Cinco de Mayo dishes! Check out the video here:
And now, here are some recipe ideas for drinks, meals, appetizers and even a dessert or two, all celebrating Mexican flavors and spice.
Un Feliz Cinco de Mayo, everyone!
