It’s that time of year again: time to send a college care package to those kids far away at school! Today I once again joined Amanda Lindquist on ABC Local 22 & FOX Local 44 to share College Care Package theme ideas as well as some tasty treats to stick in the boxes. It’s fun being away from parents and exploring independence, but a package from home with treats and care items means so much and can be just the thing to get students through a tough week of long classes and late nights.
In my previous post about How To Make A College Care Package, I shared some tips about sending care packages as well as recipes for four sweet and savory treats to stash in the package.
For this care package, a quick poll of my daughter and her college friends revealed some ideas for themed shipments that college students will really appreciate. Here are the ideas, and check out my video below where I share these ideas with Amanda!
Prepackaged & Microwavable Food Package
In many dorms the only cooking appliance available to students is a microwave oven. Even if the dining hall food is amazing and abundant, there are times when a quick microwavable or grab-and-go option is critical. In my last care package post, How To Make A College Care Package I shared that my daughter specifically requested popcorn and Easy Mac. Breakfast bars, Cup-of-Soup and snack crackers are other great options.
Cold & Flu Season Care Package
Being away from home that first time you get sick really stinks. A care package with comforting self-care items is so thoughtful. Think tissues, cold medicine, herbal teas and instant chicken noodle soup. Vitamin C supplements like Emergen-C are also a good idea, because if one student has the creeping crud, you can bet the whole dorm floor does too.
Pantry Items Package
If your student has a kitchen in their dorm or their first apartment, they will not think to pick up the kitchen basics until they’re too hungry to think straight. Send packaged mixes for baked goods (King Arthur Flour has amazing varieties,) spices to stock their cabinets and baking and cooking staples. If your student has a favorite dish that you always made for them at home, send the recipe along with the shelf-stable ingredients they’ll need to put it together.
Mid-Terms & Exam Week Care Package
Three words: caffeine, sugar and salt. These are the three basic necessities when you’re stressed out and need to stay awake for all-night study and paper-writing sessions. Sweet and salty snack mixes hit the spot here, along with packages of tea and coffee (instant if they don’t have access to a coffee maker.) This is a good time for gift cards too, to Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts and pizza places. Also, check the college website for the food service page. Many college food service companies will hold special dining events to get students through exam weeks, and sometimes make options available to parents for ordering special treats for their kids to pick up and enjoy.
Alright, this pre-packaged stuff is helpful and thoughtful, but one thing my informal poll of my daughter and her friends revealed without a doubt: homemade goodies from loved ones RULE! There is no better way to show how much you care that the time and effort put into homemade treats. Here are some recipe links for tasty treats, some savory, some sweet that are perfect to ship to your kiddo, and the video where I share some of these is below:
Have fun assembling these caring packages.
And be prepared for a whole lotta love and gratitude coming your way when your college student (and their friends) dig in!
